The cortical cultures contain neurons and many different cell types. New approaches allow genetic labeling of distinct neurons and cells such that they can be distinguished and individually studied. In this image the motor neurons (green), astrocytes (red) can be seen. The twirl emphasizes the fact that one cannot look for a long time without being mesmerized by them.
